Background and Miscellaneous Information

* Plain Talk About Depression
This flier was written by Marilyn Sargent, Office of Scientific Information, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for the Depression/ Awareness, Recognition, and Treatment (D/ART) program.

* Depression, What Every Woman Should Know
Women are disproportionately affected by depression, experiencing it at roughly twice the rate of men. Research continues to explore how the illness affects women. At the same time, it is important to increase women's awareness of what is already known about depression, so that they seek early and appropriate treatment. That is the purpose of this material.

* When a Day of Terror Causes a Lifetime of Anxiety
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition that follows a terrifying event and afflicts some 4% of the population each year. The disorder can result from any number of traumatic incidents, including kidnapping, serious accidents such as car or train wrecks, natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes, violent attacks such as a mugging, rape, or torture, or being held captive. People with PTSD often have persistent frightening thoughts and memories of a particularly horrifying ordeal and feel emotionally numb, anxious, or depressed. Although there is no surefire way to "cure" PTSD, a combination of psychotherapy and medication may help.
