The Thrombolytic (Vascular) Biology Discussion List (THROMBO-SITE) is a unique forum for the scientific discussion
of topics related to the pathophysiology, pharmacology, and
clinical aspects of thrombosis, thrombotic disorders, and
hemostasis.
This is a moderated list, which means that messages posted to
the list will first be screened for clinical appropriateness
by a list moderator.
We encourage discussions of all aspects related to the fields
of thrombosis. Appropriate discussion topics include, for
example: new theories of the pathophysiology of thrombosis;
advances in the therapy of throbocytopenias, including
conditions such as ITP and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia;
management of bleeding disorders.
Participants are encouraged to share clinical experiences
with the group. These experiences should be submitted as
brief case reports, including the relevant background data.
Clinical Cases, Summaries of Key Research
In addition, every other month, a clinical case will be
presented by the list moderator and discussed in detail with
the list participants (see HIT Cases). Furthermore, list members will receive
brief summaries of key research published in the fields
related to thrombosis and hemostasis (see HIT News).
We use the LISTSERV® system to create, manage, and control e-mail forums (also called "lists"). See What is a mailing list?
for more information about LISTSERV e-mail lists.
For more information about setting your subscriber options, see
LISTSERV FAQs.
Posts are Screened for Appropriateness
THROMBO-SITE is a moderated forum, which means that messages posted to
the list are screened for clinical appropriateness
by a moderator/editor who may reject messages that are off-topic, promotional, or generally
a waste of subscribers' time. This means that subscribers are shielded from "spam," junk
e-mail, and other offensive messages. VirSci has years of experience providing such moderation.

LISTSERV FAQs
LISTSERV® is a system that makes it possible to create, manage and control electronic
"mailing lists." LISTSERV is a registered trademark licensed exclusively to
L-Soft International, Inc.
Below are some questions and answers about LISTSERV, including questions about
subscribing, unsubscribing, and setting your subscription options for THROMBO-SITE.
- Q: What is a mailing list?
- A mailing list is a list of people's names and addresses that is used to send certain
messages or announcements to many people at once, who are usually expected to share a
common interest in the contents of the message - just like in the real world. However,
unlike in the real world, you can usually join and leave the list as you see fit, so there is a
good chance that you will actually find at least some of the messages interesting. In fact,
electronic mailing lists are more like clubs or magazines than a "real world" mailing list.
- Q: How do I join THROMBO-SITE?
- THROMBO-SITE provides a collegial on-line atmosphere for email-based discussions
among health professional peers.
To subscribe to THROMBO-SITE, send an E-mail message to
LISTSERV@virsci.com with the
following in the message body:
SUBSCRIBE THROMBO-SITE firstname lastname
(all one one line). Substitute your own first and last names (as in SUBSCRIBE THROMBO-SITE John Smith, MD).
DO NOT
INCLUDE ANY OTHER TEXT IN THE BODY OF THE MESSAGE (not even a
"signature").
You will receive the application by return email.

- Q: How do I un-subscribe from THROMBO-SITE?
- To remove your name from the THROMBO-SITE list, send an E-mail message to
LISTSERV@virsci.com with the
following in the message body:
SIGNOFF THROMBO-SITE
DO NOT
INCLUDE ANY OTHER TEXT IN THE BODY OF THE MESSAGE (not even a
"signature").
- Q: How do I see messages sent to the list before I joined (or whenever I want after I join)?
- The messages sent (or posted) to a mailing list may be saved in files known as list
archives for future reference. These archive files are owned by the list owner who sets the
policy for their use. Other expressions you may encounter are list notebooks and list logs;
they all mean the same thing to people from different computer cultures. These archives are
usually organized in log files. A log file is a disk file containing everything that was said on
the list on a given month.
To
retrieve a log file via e-mail, send an e-mail message to
LISTSERV@virsci.com with the
following in the message body:
GET THROMBO-SITE LOGYYMM
where YY
is the year (e.g., 96, 97, 98) and MM is the number of the month
(eg, 09, 10, 11, 12, etc.). You will receive the appropriate log by return e-mail (it can be a very long message!).
Perhaps a better way to retrieve past messages is to visit the
Thrombo_Site Archives on the web.
Visit this page (/conference/THROMBO-SITE.html)
to access a selective, edited archive of interesting discussions.

- Q: How do I see who else is subscribed to the list?
- Our policy is not to allow other subscribers or third parties to retrieve the complete
list of e-mail addresses and names of subcribers to any of our lists. Consequently, the
usual LISTSERV REVIEW command has been disabled.
You will, of course, see the e-mail addresses and names of people who post messages to
the list. You can then send these people private e-mail. It is our policy to remove
subscribers from the list if they send unsolicited e-mail to other subscribers who complain about this to us.

- Q: How do I send messages to the list?
- Now that you are subscribed to the list, all you need to do is ask your question or
participate in the current discussion and wait for someone to answer.
Posting new messages
To post a new message to the list you send mail to the list address (THROMBO-SITE@VIRSCI.COM) using the same
procedure as when you send mail to other people. In the SUBJECT line, please enter a
subject that relates to your message so that other subscribers can see at a glance what is
being discussed.
Replying to messages from the list
Once you become familiar with LISTSERV and mailing lists, you will probably want to
respond to a posting you have read. The best way to respond is by using the "reply"
function of your mail program (which is sometimes called "answer", "respond" or
something similar). This way the message subject is preserved and the other subscribers
can see that your message is a reply to the original question.
Try to keep your reply short. Most often the reply feature repeats the entire message you
are replying to. This is useful so that other subscribers can follow the discussion.
However, try to edit the copy of the original message so that it contains only the relevant
information. This is especially important if you have set the DIGEST option (see below).
Rember that hundreds of other people will receive your message. Therefore, be
careful not to send a message to the list thinking that you are replying privately to another
subscriber's message.

- Q: How do I cut down on the number of messages I receive from the list?
- List messages are available either individually, or in DIGEST format. You
can get your messages one at a time, or if you chose DIGEST format, your
messages will be batched into one HUGE message and sent to you once a day. The default option -- active when you first subscribe -- is one message at a time.
To get digests instead of individual posts, send an e-mail message to
LISTSERV@virsci.com with the
following in the message body:
SET THROMBO-SITE DIGEST
NOTE: If you are replying to a message you recieved as part of a DIGEST, you need to do two things:
- Replace the default Subject in your reply with an appropriate Subject; otherwise other subscribers will not know what the message refers to, and
- Edit the copy of the original DIGEST message so that it contains only the relevant
information from the individual message you are replying to.
To get individual posts instead of digests, send an e-mail message to
LISTSERV@virsci.com with the
following in the message body:
SET THROMBO-SITE NODIGEST

- Q: How do I stop receiving mail from the list when I am away from the office? (And how do I turn it back on when I return?)
- If you go away on vacation, or you know you will be away from your computer
for a while it is a good idea to stop your mail while you are gone. You will still remain
subscribed to the list.
To stop your mail, send an e-mail message to
LISTSERV@virsci.com with the
following in the message body:
SET THROMBO-SITE NOMAIL
To start your mail again when you get back, send an e-mail message to
LISTSERV@virsci.com with the
following in the message body:
SET THROMBO-SITE MAIL
NOTE: Some people set up their mail system to send automated replies to e-mail
received during their vacations. This causes additional overhead for the list moderated, who
may delete your name from the list is this becomes especially bothersome. To prevent this,
we suggest that you set the NOMAIL option as described above.
